“Yeah, that’s right. It was a bit hard to say.”

Murakumo Private High School. Within the classroom of class A of the second year.

The rest of their classmates had already left as school was already over for the day.

“Well, anyways, I would be happy if you could understand a little bit of what I felt. The fact that what you were going to be tasked with doing was taking part in something similar to a drinking party for a sports oriented club of some sort. If I were to tell you that, it would have been a bit… you know. It really was hard for me to say.”

“That’s troubling. Not saying something because it’s hard to say is not exactly reliable.”

“Ah, hey Yuuki. Stop it with that sarcastic and overly polite language. Speak normally at school. Normally. We’re classmates in this current setting.”

“…”

Yuuki sighed at his superior who had stuck out her tongue and gave him a wink before returning to his work of organizing the class printouts.

Within the afterschool classroom, the two young people both from the Tsukumo organization were the only ones left. Outside of the windows, there was continuous shouting coming from the baseball, soccer, and various other sports clubs as they practiced.

“Well, anyways,” Returning to his normal tone, Yuuki let out another sigh. “Even if you were to tell me any differently, the results would have probably been the same. That goddess really doesn’t hold back in making others drink. I probably would’ve been crushed in the same manner.”

“Yeah, I know right?”

“However, that doesn’t mean any of the resentment that I have for you has dwindled. Not one bit.”

“Ah. You’re acting up again. You unexpectedly like to hold grudges don’t you.”

“Of course I’m going to hold it against you. I had to come to school after experiencing a hangover.”

“Now now, cheer up. I’ll treat you to something good. How about it?”

Yuuki looked at the begging Kurumi and once again let out another sigh.

He does actually understand.

Nothing would be solved even if he continued to make claims towards his superior. In the first place, Koiwai Kurumi was only a messenger, at most an observer that would accompany him in his duties. She doesn’t have any authority in this sort of situation.

She’s really only a superior in name. Her position is hard to even explain. In fact, the Tsukumo organization as a whole is one that is hard to explain.

Despite being an organization, a core does not exist. It was only a gathering of people with very vague authoritative relationships.

Technically speaking, there was a parliamentary group of people that made decisions, however, there wasn’t an administrative group that managed those decisions.

It is an organization not established through hard structures, but rather through the various skills of all of its members. As an organization its strength still fundamentally depends on the power of its members— something that commonly exists in professional sports for example. It really is quite strange for an organization that controls the world from behind the scenes.

“Well, in general the Tsukumo organization is unseen, unspoken, and unheard. As such, it really is irregular for us to be openly going to school like this together.” Kurumi said.

As there wasn’t much of a structure to the organization, vertical and even horizontal relationships were sparse meaning noninterference was standard between members. They made individual decisions yet moved with one goal in mind— pulling an example from the human body, they would be equivalent to the immune system.

“Well at least for now, we can say it was a success.” Kurumi gave her approval. “You drank until you blacked out, but thanks to your guts, the goddess has done her job. If that’s the case, everything should be okay.”

“The results are alright then?”

“That’s right. It’s important to think like that.”

“Just like for this alright result, I was forced to drink like a cow or horse.”

“I’ll prepare some good stomach medicine. A good doctor too.”

“I’ve already got both of those. My family is in the pharmaceutical business after all.”

“That’s enviable. It must be nice to be rich.”

“If that’s the case, do you want to switch?”

“I’ll pass. I can’t drink after all.”

An obvious response to Yuuki’s question.

If they were in opposite positions, Yuuki would’ve probably made the same response. Even if they were a part of the super secretive Tsukumo organization, they were still technically high schoolers.

“For now,” While returning to her work of dividing the printouts, Kurumi spoke. “The work you’ve done hasn’t been bad. Continue on in the same manner.”

“…This means I’ll be going to the goddess’s mansion everyday from now on?”

“I’ll leave that up to you and your own discretion. As of right now, the goddess doesn’t need to do her job everyday, so just getting a relatively good result with minimal effort is enough. Your methods in getting results also won’t be questioned.”

“That makes it harder for me, when you give me such relaxed conditions.” Yuuki said with a bitter expression.

Kurumi shut one of her eyes, “Well anyways, if we just leave her alone, that goddess will stop doing her job. Use any hand you have to make her do her work. I may be repeating myself, but I don’t care what methods you use. I won’t complain as long as you produce results. I’ll back you up with everything I have, so just do your best for me, please?”

“Roger that.” Yuuki gave a curt response.

He didn’t have the option to refuse in the first place. Because of the strong independence of all of its members, individual will must never be prioritized over the will of the organization. That idea is pounded into the mind of every person the moment they become a member.

“Well then, I got all of that now, Koiwai-san.”

“Great!”

“I do have something I want to ask though.”

“Yup, go ahead.”

“How long will this be for? How long will I be in charge of this goddess that is?”

“Well, that’s obvious.” His superior spoke with a mysterious expression. “Until you die, Yuuki-kun. Historically, every person who has taken up the role has continued until they died. As such, do your best. I’m rooting for you.”
